Bachendri Pal the first indian woman to climb Mt Everest On 23rd May 1984, Bachendri reached the roof of the Mount Everest and she was standing at the peak 8,848 m (29,028 ft) along with one another climber at 1:07 PM IST. She earned a coveted place for herself in Indian history by becoming the first Indian woman on summit of Mount Everest (Sagarmatha), the highest mountain peak in the world In the year 1984. India had scheduled its 4th expedition christened “Everest ‘84’ . She was selected as one of the members of the elite groups of 6 Indian women and 11 men who were indulge to attempt a climb to the Mount Everest.
On May 1984 the team begins their climb.Though, a sudden landslide at Lhotse glacier get her and her team members injured. Bachendri Pal continued her climb until she reached the peak of the Everest. She proved that a woman with a great courage,enough sensibility and determination to work towards it become successful in any field.
Bachendri Pal was born on 24th May, 1954 in Uttarkashi District of Garhwal in a Nakuri village.A free-willing, fearless, and adventure-loving girl, Bachendri always dreamt of being a mountaineer. At the age of 12, she along with her several schoolmates climbed a 13,123 feet high peak throughout a school picnic that was her first climbing experience. Later on she joined a Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in 1982,at Hari.K.Govind hill. she climbed Gangotri(21,900 ft) and Rudugaira (19,091 ft).
On that time, she worked as an instructor at the National Adventure Foundation(NAF), which had assemble an adventure school for training women to learn mountaineering.
Currently, Bachendri Pal is employed with Tata Steel where she controls high-altitude training workshops for the corporate workforce. Besides this, she also works as an active guide, training women in mountaineering and river rafting.
Bachendri Pal had bagged several awards and recognition during her mountaineering career:
- 1993: Organized the Indo-Nepalese Women Everest Expedition.
- 1994: Participated in River Ganga Rafting Expedition Received and received National Adventure Award.
- 1995:Was given the Yash Bharati Award from the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
- 1997: Received the honorary doctorate degree from the University of Garhwal and was awarded the prestigious Mahila Shiromani Award.
